RB20DET Conversion

DSC00036_1.jpg (30692 bytes)

This is the front-cut being used for the conversion. This is an HR31 Skyline GTS turbo, which has the NICS RB20DET with a 4 speed auto transmission.

The whole front, motor, gearbox, dash, wiring, panels, etc will be transferred to an Australian built R31 Pintara.

This is a very good condition front-cut,all the panels are straight, headlights like new, full carpet, steering wheel, and even the key in the ignition! The only thing missing on the whole thing was one electronic strut(unfortunately)and no one wants to sell just one strut.....

The Start of the fun....

The first difficulty was getting the front cut home! Transport on a truck was looking to be very expensive, and also I had concerns about broken headlights, dinted panels, etc.  The solution came in the form of a ute, which the front-cut was tied (very tightly!) to.Then came the 6 hour drive home with half a car on the back!
Lots of careful driving later,we arrived home, and ran into then next test: getting it off! No forklifts in the near area ment we had to improvise a bit.  An engine crane was hired from a local shop, and with much creaking and groaning, the front-cut was lifted up enough so the ute could be driven away from underneath it,and then put down very quickly!

I wouldn't recommend doing this to anyone,as the front-cut must weigh 500kg or so and is really beyond the safe lifting limits of an engine crane. (Well, the one I hired anyway!)

The front cut safely on the ground in the shed.

I sat the cut on some axle stands, for easy access to gearbox crossmember nuts, etc, under the car.

The dash was still in very good condition, and had a full carpet, and even floor mats!

Only 21,000k's on the clock! Yes,genuine too! The pedal rubbers are like new,as are the blinker and wiper stalks. The brake discs are hardly touched, and still have the factory Nissan pads-which are as thick as new!

Before I get too far ahead,I should show this picture......

Note the sludge in the inlet!   Yuck!
One VERY badly blown head gasket..the end of the stock Pintara's CA20E.

OK,here goes my rough guide on an install....

The first thing to do,is rip out the old motor! This one was in good condition (apart from the head gasket!) so I took care to remove all the wires and boxes and stuff so the motor and computer could be used again one day if need be.
Once the old motor's out of the way,it's time to get into the Front-cut.......
